What is Organic Food:
Organic food is food that is produced using methods of farming which avoids man-made chemical fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, growth regulators and biotechnology. It applies natural fertilizers, and manure or compost to feed soil and plants. The use of organic food is healthier for humans and for the environment. According to some research, organic food nutrition value is very high compared to conventional food. The term “organic” relates to the methods farmers develop and handle agricultural produce.
What is Organic Farming:
Organic farming is a method of farming which is the process that includes techniques to obtain excellent and good crop yields without harming the natural environment or the people who work on it. It doesn’t use pesticide, fertilizers, GMOs, bacteria and development regulators for farming. Organic farming builds good soil and promotes water and water conservation. Extensive livestock handling, giving complete attention to their developmental changes, behavioral demands and problems of animal welfare in nutrition, accommodation, safety, breeding, and rearing.
Organic labeling:
The united states department of agriculture (USDA) government has set up an organic certification program that requires all organic food carries inspections to ensure the food to meet the strict standard followed by the government. They will not allow labeling as organic if the product is made from genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) and irradiation. If the product has to be labeled as organic, it should include 95% of ingredients coming from organically produced plants or animals.
Advantages of organic food:
1. Decreases the toxins level in the food and improves human health.
2. Provide fresh, healthy foods.
3. Do not use chemical fertilizers, synthetic pesticides or herbicides.
4. Helps for animal welfare such as safety, housing, breeding.
5. Environmental benefits such as increased soil fertility increased biodiversity and increased water quality.
Disadvantages of organic food:
1. Organic foods are more expensive.
2. Lower output of crops.
3. Uncertainty about plant development in the long term.
4. Organic fruits and vegetables have a shorter shelf life.
Conventional food:
In conventional food, farmers use chemical fertilizers and products in standard farming to increase the growth of the plant. Conventional food is produced using pesticides, synthetic herbicides. They spray insecticides to reduce pests and diseases. To avoid disease, give livestock antibiotics, growth hormones, and medicines. Using conventional food can be dangerous to humans and the environment.
Availability of organic food:
Organic products are available in the market as well as online grocery stores. Organic vegetables and fruits along with cold pressed oils are available in retail stores. More people are buying organic food, vegetables, and fruits products, although people may be spending less money, they are buying better quality foods. This helps to change in food habits and improves health. Many consumers buy organic food from the farmers directly as they found it is less expensive this helps to build a connection with the farmers.
Benefits of organic food:
As organic food doesn’t contain any artificial pesticides or any other chemicals additives, No antibiotics, and growth hormones, which helps to improve your health. It reduces the risk of diseases, illness, and giddiness. It also helps to prevent heart diseases, cancer, vision problems, premature aging. Organically cultivated food item produced from nutrients such as antioxidant, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus, with lower exposure to nitrates and chemical substances in organically grown crops, vegetables, and grains relative to conventionally grown products.
The antioxidant activity in organic food protects the cells from undergoing damage from oxidation. Generally, the antioxidant content has the potential to dimish the harmful effects of toxic compounds and prevents the growth of certain cancer cells. The vitamin C present in organic food helps to protect the healing of wounds, maintaining the growth of muscles, improves bone health. Organic food will be rich in antioxidants and helps in hair growth.
Consumption of conventional food may result in skin diseases and skin allergies due to the lack of nutrition and conventional food is grown with the pesticides which are not good for skin health. So, organic food is the best choice to improve skin health. The consumption of phenolic compounds lowers heart diseases, reduces oxidative stress.
